How does the Bank store the cord blood? How does it assure the quality of the cord blood?
2008-05-29 15:31:23
Upon receiving the cord blood, the Bank verifies the mother’s information at the Blood Collecting Room and establishes an electronic file. The cord blood is then sent to the clean rooms at thelaboratory for hematopoietic stem cell separation, sample taking and the adding of cryoprotectant before the temperature is progressively lowered to-196°C for storage in liquid nitrogen. A computerized bar code system is employed at each step to identify the bar code attached to the cryophial, and the results are verified by at least two officers, to ensure data accuracy. Similarly, all examination results are validated by at least two officers.
To ensure safety, each liquid nitrogen tank is fitted with a computerized refill system and an electronic alarm, and staff members inspect and record the amount of liquid nitrogen in the tank every day. These measures ensure that the cord blood is safe and secure with the Bank. To guarantee utmost security, we also perform genetic analysis on the cord blood before its use in a transplant, to prevent any chance of a mismatch. The Bank pledges to keep all information strictly confidential, so as to ensure all privately banked cord blood is used only for its designated purposes.
